Restaurants beginning with A-B-C-D-G

In 1924 Agustí Agut and his wife, Paquita, opened an old tavern, which some time later was known  as "La Fonda Restaurante Agut", which, in those days, served  food to the ships' crews of  the nearby port.
Later, during the dark years of the Civil War and the post-war, the restaurant continued to serve its costumer even behind closed doors.

In the 1950s and 1960s, and with the assistance of their son-in-law Josep Castellví, it became well renowned when the Catalonian intelligentsia and the art world found there their secluded spot, as it can affirmed by the numerous paintings hanging on its walls.  Such art works were painted by young Catalonian artists of that period who exchanged their work for meals for them  and their friends at the restaurant.

Nowadays, and after a careful rehabilitation in the year 2001, L'Agut continues offering old-time traditional Catalonian cooking with small touches of seasonal cuisine. Today, 50 years later, the paintings are still hanging on the same walls, watching the passing of time.

We aim to provide always the best fish pieces from the food markets of Barcelona. In BIGFISH we work with two different cuisines: the Mediterranean, which is based on fish and seasonal produce, and the Japanese, in which the sushi is the signature dish. Our sushi is of the highest quality as we have the best fresh tuna of the fish market. Bluefin tuna is the type of fish mostly appreciated and valued by the Japanese, although we use this tuna for other non-Japanese recipes. The list of wines is short but ideal and perfect to accompany our excellent menu.

The seafood dishes served at Boca Grande are made with the best Galician shellfish products and the best local fresh fish, as they are bought in the fish market just on the same day they are served; they also have a wide variety of dishes that are served on a rotating basis and which are served with the most appropriate garnishes.
In addition to their menu suggestions, an option is to choose a piece of fish of the day and prepare it  to taste, baked or grilled.

Cuines Santa Caterina is located in the new Mercado de Santa Caterina  - the premises was renovated by the leading architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue of  the  architecture studio EMBT  in the Born district. In Catalan, the word  "Cuines" refers to the plural for cuisine, and the plural is because the restaurant serves 4 different types of cuisine: Asian, Mediterranean, Italian and vegetarian.

From one year or two ago, the fusion of  different food produce is starting to be a common phenomenon in many restaurants of Barcelona. Cuines is part of Grupo Tragaluz, which is related to very elegant places such as Hotel Omm, Bestial, Negro, Tragaluz, etc. ...

The decor of the restaurant reminds us of an Scandinavian interior design due to the simplicity of the materials which are made of wood, stone, with rubber plants among the tables, columns of light and a large wall composed of shelves stacked with wine bottles and glass jars containing oil olive oil, vinegar, and flour.

El 4 Gats C/ Montsió, 3 - Barcelona 08002

This story begins in Paris in the late nineteenth century. Pere Romeu worked as an animator and bartender at the cabaret Le Chat Noir. He, seduced by the environment, decided to open a similar restaurant in Barcelona. It had to be like a tavern: cheap food and piano music. He was financially supported by some friends, Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusinol, among others.

Els Quatre Gats was inaugurated on June 12, 1897 in Montsió Street, on the premises of a building designed by the architect Puig building. It drew people's attention because it was quite unusual as you could see fine details and art combined with characteristic objects of a traditional boarding house. As Rubén Darío, one of the first famous visitors, said once: It was more than a copy of  "Le Chat noir", otherwise it would not have become a legendary place. All those who visited Barcelona dropped by the restaurant; the list of regular visitors was indeed a long one. They expected something different from a good meal. As Rusiñol said, the essential part was "the food of the spirit." And the same goes for Pere Romeu, who sat with his customers and presided gatherings in which they "fixed the world." Entertainment and Chinese shadow puppet shows were also held,  and Ramon Casas painted, following the fashion of the time, posters to announce the shows.

El Petit Comité, Passatge de la Concepció, 13, 08008 - Barcelona

The restaurant El Petit Comité offers a traditional Catalan cuisine developed by Fermi Puig, a Michelin-starred chef of the Hotel Majestic. Top local chefs have begun to move forward ... or backward, that is, to return to the traditional Catalan cuisine, and reinventing some classic dishes in the process, and it  thanks to the use of excellent ingredients and improved techniques that are aimed at getting the best out of  ancient recipes such as  poached eggs,  trinxat  (chopped cabbage with potatoes and bacon) or Canelones amb bechamel de tòfona (canelonni with truffled  béchamel) or a traditional dessert like mel i mató (a type of fresh cheese and honey), Crema  Catalan (Caramel custard), pears in red wine and chocolate con churros (thick hot chocolate drink with long sweet fritters) .
This is just the rustic presentation of a series of traditional dishes, as the rest of elements are up to day and firmly keep the rest of senses in a modern and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
This restaurant is an attempt by Puig to open up to less elitist groups, by serving more affordable versions of the Catalan classics.

El Portalón  C/ Banys Nous, 20 08002 - Barcelona

There are bars that are a part of a life, and which are consistent with the spirit of an age but when you go back to them after a long time you feel yourself out of context. The Portalón, is among those places that is frequented in one's early youth in an attempt to discover a new Barcelona. But I would still recommend it. The Portalón is what can be described as  a tavern: wooden tables, wine barrels, clients leaning on the bar counter, that is a tavern atmosphere. But the food is good and inexpensive. If one day you want to be involved in that atmosphere, this tavern, close to Cathedral and Pi squares (both squares are adjoining), will not disappoint you.

El Quim de la Boquería, La Rambla, 91, Tel.: 933 01 98 10

Just inside the famous food market La Boqueria in Las Ramblas one can find another jewel of the restaurants of Barcelona:  El Quim de la Boqueria. El Xampanyet, C/ de Montcada, 22, 08004 - Barcelona

The bar El Xampanyet is located in a district of the city called Born that has preserved the true essence of the oldest bars in Barcelona. It opened its door in 1929.  Its name comes from the name given to the wine they serve there: a sparkling wine called Xampanyet.

As you know, people spend their time with their friends in the old traditional bars of Barcelona while they ate tapas and  drunk beers or wine.  So this is a place where tapas, cheeses, Iberian cured ham and drinks are consumed, and all of it accompanied by a little noise as it is a small and very crowded venue.

Rest. En Ville, C/ Doctor Dou, 14 08001 Barcelona

En Ville is located in a historic building that still has a series of architectural elements such as, for instance, the vaulted brick ceiling. An opinion poll carried out by the Barcelona newspaper La Vanguardia has ranked this restaurant as one of the nicest in Barcelona. En Ville offers a warm atmosphere that makes you travel through time. Walls covered with old mirrors reflect the marble tables and a cozy fireplace. Summer
facade opens onto the street and creates semi-open terraces with plants and trees.

A traditional market menu with a selection of tapas, fresh fish and meats is available daily. Its cuisine is defined by the creativity and development of original dishes that  combine traditional elements of the Catalan and French gastronomies. En Ville is the perfect place to enjoy both in pairs and in groups.

The Hotel Arts of Barcelona and the chef Sergi Arola (two Michelin stars) became partners three years ago in order to open the Restaurant Arola, which offers a modern concept of finger food within an innovative and cheerful atmosphere.

The restaurant presents a relaxed and friendly atmosphere that is complemented with a modern and avant-garde interior design. The restaurant offers a menu consisting mainly of hot and cold tapas that have become one of the most desired food presentations.

The Restaurant Biocenter was founded in 1980 with the intention to spread a new vision on vegetarian food, as well as organic farming and whole-grain products.
It offers a home-made and first-quality cuisine. While this is a style that has lasted to this day and which has even spread to other vegetarian restaurants.
Biocenter is a cozy and warm place and is perfect for events: gastronomy classes, lectures, meetings, special parties or dinners for large groups, and always adapting to the needs of their customers.

Caelis is surprising for both its nineteenth-century elegance and its spaciousness. It has an entrance to the restaurant, which is separated from that of the hotel, a private hall and a typical modern lounge. It offers a high-quality and creative haute cuisine that is carefully presented. Price of the a la carte menu: from 39 € to 130 €.

Nobody drops by Cal Pep with preconceived ideas, or in silence. People drop by to enjoy the freshest products, and it with two alternatives: to eat at one of the few tables inside, in a more relaxed atmosphere (reservation required); or at the bar counter, if you can find some free space at it; or wait to see when someone leaves a free space. As to the menu, don't worry, they suggest dishes or you can choose tapas displayed on the bar counter, but the excellent quality of the food and the best preparation in the kitchen is always guaranteed. Prices are in line with the products served and with the sympathy and good service by the staff.
